I was pretty set on getting a Grand Prix GXP for the longest time but realized for a nice one I would be pushing my budget to high. Also that maintenance on a 4 cyl would be cheaper as I'm planning to head back to school.
Thanks.

As with any uncomfirmed Apple news, take this one with a big ole grain of sodium chloride. PatentlyApple reports that Apple has been granted a patent for a steering-wheel-mounted remote control for various iDevices.

The patent describes a device looking like the multi-touch controller from an original Apple iPod but mounted to a clamp that grabs your car's steering wheel. Once attached to the outer rim, it would put control of your iPhone, iPod touch or, conceivably, iPad right at your finger tips.

Genius? No. It looks ridiculous and potentially more distracting than just fumbling for your iPhone while driving. The patent says the device is touch-sensitive, so any accidental touch during every hand-over-hand turn ups the volume, changes songs or calls your ex-girl/boyfriend. How's that for driver distraction? On top of all that, many states (if not all) have outlawed anything attached to a car's steering wheel.

Like many companies, Apple files hundreds of patents every year. A good percentage of them are just meant to protect the company's intellectual property and are never used for a consumer product. Some analysts speculate that Apple also files patents for wild ideas just to throw off the competition. This could easily fit into either of those categories.Apple granted patent for steering-wheel controls to curb distracted driving originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2012 14:59:00 EST.
Say what you want about the German-based tuner Mansory, but the company definitely has a style all its own. The same can be said for their latest creation, the Ferrari 458 Spider Monaco Edition, which is channeling quite a bit of the Ferrari Enzo on its snout.

Mansory says that the new body panels, all of which are constructed of lightweight carbon fiber, save a little over 130 pounds, and with power boosted to 590 horsepower the car is capable of hitting 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 205 mph. The interior of the 458 Spider Monaco Edition gets the Mansory treatment as well, with custom upholstery done in leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber in a combination of red and white.

Mansory says it will produce just three of the Monaco Edition Ferrari 458 Spiders. No word on pricing, although we can't imagine the changes come cheap. Scroll down below to read the official details from Mansory.Continue reading Mansory channels Enzo styling in Ferrari 458 Spider Monaco Edition
I'm currently in the market for new furniture (bedroom set and sofas). EQ3 was one of the first stores I thought about, as it has modern/contemporary furniture design.
If you're looking to give your Mercedes-Benz an added dose of performance, look no further than Brabus. The aftermarket tuning house specializes in customizing Daimler's finest, and doesn't stop at upgrading the engine and running gear, either. With packages like the iBusiness suite, Brabus will turn your S-Class, for example, into a 219-mph high-tech office on wheels. In other words, it'll make it more like a private jet. But what if you want your jet to feel more like your customized Mercedes? Brabus can help with that, too.

The new Brabus Private Aviation division is set up in response to customer demand and follows a similar project launched recently to outfit yacht interiors. It allows discerning and well-heeled clients to either retrofit the cabins of their existing private jets or commission the accoutrements to be fitted to new aircraft direct from whatever aerospace concern is building their new private jet.

The focus is on both luxury and business capabilities, which Brabus is currently displaying with two concepts at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition in Geneva. Scope 'em out in the high-resolution image gallery above, the press release below and the dedicated website beyond the link.Continue reading Brabus turns its attention to custom jets

Natural gas Vs. electric

The price of natural gas has dropped yet again as of May 1st. A cubic meter costs 22.11 cents and has about 36,000 btu.

The price of natural gas has dropped yet again as of May 1st. A cubic meter costs 22.11 cents and has about 36,000 btu.

Electric costs 6.77 cents per kwh, which is about 3400 btu.

For electricity to produce the same amount of btu as one cubic meter, you would need to spend about 71.68 cents or about 3.24 times as much. This is neglecting efficiency losses with natural gas (8-20%). Electric furnaces are 100% efficient.

I'm seriously thinking of hooking that stuff up to my rig. One cubic meter is equivalent to one litre of diesel. 22 cents vs 100+ cents. There are aftermarket kits out there. This would be perfect for a diesel car.

I hope nobody here locked their natural gas prices in! Or worse yet chose an electric furnace over a natural gas.

As the title states I just saw, for the first time, a new HFP Accord at Future Shop on St. James.. It was white, with some really tasteful bronze colored rims. I liked it, definitely caught my eye.

Personally I think Honda dropped the ball with the HFP program, they only added suspension parts and a tasteful body kit. They could have at least done the exhaust or an intake imho. Perhaps a different tune.

But for $2700 more on the Si and for $2000 more on the Accord (EX-L V6 w/ Nav), I guess it seems fair.. Also, why is the Si's HFP model more than the Accord?

What do you guys think about this?

So I was thinking today as I had some alkaline batteries in my hand to be tossed out; is it really that bad to throw out batteries? I have always been snarled at every time I've said I just throw them out, but I always wonder, do THEY even bother to recycle them? Probably not.
What do you do with your old batteries?

I found this little tidbit of info:

In 1996, the Battery Act was signed into law. In short, this act was written to gradually eliminate mercury from all batteries. Because of the significantly reduced amount of mercury in alkaline batteries, the Environmental Protection Agency has determined that you can dispose of these types of batteries in your regular garbage. Unfortunately, there is currently no cost-effective recycling program for alkaline batteries in the United States.

However, alkaline batteries are the only type of battery you should throw away in the garbage. As a general rule, if the battery is rechargeable, you should dispose of it at an authorized recycling center. (Most home superstores and larger electronics stores will take them.) This also applies to small electronics where you can't remove the battery, such as rechargeable calculators.

Here's a list of the battery types you should not put in your garbage:

Silver oxide batteries (watch batteries, hearing aids, etc.)
Lithium manganese batteries (cameras, calculators, light-up tennis shoes, etc.)
Nickel cadmium or Ni-Cd batteries (cell phones, power tools, laptop computers, etc.)
Sealed lead acid batteries (video cameras, wheelchairs, automobiles, ATVs, etc.)

By and large, the machines created for the SEMA show in Las Vegas are built for lounging around under convention center lights and not much else. All those go-fast parts we see bolted on do little more than collect lustful stares from from the crowd. But Creations n' Chrome set out to discover just what their bolt on additions to its Ford Mustang were good for. Under the outrageous 3dCarbon bodykit sits a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 good for around 580 horsepower at 8 psi of boost on stock internals. KW served up a set of Variant 3 coilovers, and Hotchkis took care of front and rear sway bars.

The crew rolled the blown Mustang out the to the Mojave Mile for a top speed run. The machine racked up a final velocity of 182.4 mph, though the final seconds of the run looked anything but stable. Still, we're impressed at the machine's performance. For perspective, the Boss 302 is only good for 155 mph. Mark Heidaker's Hennessey Ford GT is back to work snagging records. Sean Kennedy once again took to the wheel of the machine at the Houston Half Mile Shootout, and just as before, the duo didn't disappoint. Kennedy was able to pilot the wicked GT to an astonishing 212.9 miles per hour in a mere half mile, successfully snagging the world record in the process. Not too shabby.

As you may recall, this same team walked away with the standing mile world record back in March. At that time, Kennedy shot the GT to 257.7 mph in the allotted distance. We have to wonder what these guys have up their sleeves for the next stunt.
Vilner has taken the time to give the BMW F800R a once over to create the Predator. Built for a wealthy Russian businessman, the machine received a complete aesthetic redesign with plenty of components hewn from carbon fiber.

What isn't stitched from composite is coated in chrome, and the company's engineers set about shortening the bike by almost 10 inches. Vilner also ditched the dual saddle for a single seat variant and remade the headlight array. Red LEDs have replaced the standard bulbs, and a set of repurposed BMW Z4 turning indicators are now part of the action.

The Predator remains largely unchanged mechanically, though Vilner threw in a new, hand-built exhaust system. That means this machine still yields around 87 horsepower from its 800cc engine. Scroll down to check out the quick press release as well as a video of the bike.Continue reading Vilner takes on the BMW F800R [w/video]

Hey folks ... made a purchase, finally: 1982 Kawasaki KZ250.

(yes, the cap is off the plug in this pic - it was intentional)
I figure it's a perfect first-year bike for several reasons: easy to ride, cheap to insure, easy to learn the mechanics of ...

First of all, I'm completely new to maintenance and troubleshooting on motorcycles. I've replaced the spark plug with the recommended one (previous owner was using the wrong plug).

It'll start and idle, but after a couple minutes, starts to slow down and dies. At that point, it won't easily restart again - I have to open the throttle to get it to start back up (which means I'm introducing more air, I think), but it won't stay running at that point. I have to actually let the bike cool down before trying again. Obviously, the bike is unrideable at this point (well, I assume it is... I don't want to risk getting stranded somewhere LOL - I did manage to get around the block today, though).

At first, I suspected bad gas, since the bike had apparently been sitting for a while under the previous owner. There isn't an inline fuel filter on the bike. I drained the tank itself, and also drained the carb using the overflow screw/hose. No obvious debris coming out. Gas is now new, and Seafoam has been measured in.

I've checked the air filter, and while it's an old filter, it's clean. I used some compressed air on it, and there was no sign of any dirtiness at all.

So, the bike starts and runs, and after a couple minutes, it just peters out. Once the bike died, I opened the gas cap, and tried to start again. It still struggled and wouldn't fire up. I guess since it's the same with the cap sealed/open, that means there's no problem with the tank venting?

Petcock is set correctly. As an experiment this last time, I set it to 'RES', started the bike, and then immediately moved it to 'RUN'. There was no change in idle speed or anything when I did that (and the bike will start with it set to 'RUN', I was just curious if it would show anything).

Funny thing, though. Apparently, someone previously installed a secondary cutoff switch (circled in red, below) for the fuel, after the petcock. It goes like this:
Tank -> Petcock -> secondary cutoff -> carb

I couldn't understand why until I started playing around with these things. Apparently, the petcock's OFF position doesn't actually stop the gas flow... gas will still trickle through. The secondary valve stops it (so you have to open that valve in order to ride). Is this relevant to the problem of the bike slowly dying, or is this just something else that I'll change out and make proper anyway (which I will.. replacement petcocks are hella cheap)?

For the record, I've got the 2-fuel-switches-thing figured out, and I'm running them wide-open, so that can't (in and of itself) be the cause of the slow death.. LOL

Plan for tomorrow after work is to play with the fuel mix/pilot screws and see what that gets me.

I'm seriously trying to avoid tearing into the carb since the bike runs - I figure I'll try everything else possible first LOL

Things are finally working out for me, and I've been thinking about getting a new car. I just don't know where to start looking. The point of this thread is for me to gather information about the cars you would personally consider with a $30k budget. First and second hand experiences, horror stories, praise, etc. Anything that would help me narrow my options down.

Here's what I'm looking for. Don't feel obligated to post according to my own requirements, but if you could, it would help a lot.

Four doors
08 and up
Nothing high-mileage for the year
Reliable, though it would probably only be summer-driven
Fun to drive (corners well, responsive steering), or at least has potential
AWD, FWD, RWD, doesn't matter. But I'm used to FWD.
Automatic transmission

As far as style, I love the look of the 8th gen Accord Coupe, but I'd prefer something with four doors and the sedan looks like a totally different car from the back. Also, the look of the new Genesis Sedan is starting to grow on me.

We see some fairly radical machinery come up for sale on occasion, but few creations manage to raise our eyebrows so high as Project Sea Lion. Created to nab amphibious land speed record, the machine uses a Mazda 13b rotary engine for propulsion, and its creator says the drivetrain is good enough to launch the vehicle to 180 miles per hour if there's enough roadway. Given that the current record sits at 125 mph, the Sea Lion should have no problem nabbing that title.

Top speed on the water may be a bit more cumbersome, however. The quickest amphibious vehicle can get to 60 mph right now, and Sea Lion's builder says the creation will need more horsepower to make that happen.

He suggests a Renesis conversion. We tend to agree.

Made from tig-welded aluminum and a variety of CNC-machined components, the car comes only with a bill of sale. That means we can forget all about driving/floating this thing to work. If you like what you see and what to give the amphibious land speed record a go for yourself, Project Sea Lion is for sale over at Fantasy Junction for the low price of $259,500. Scroll down for a quick video and be sure to check out Fantasy Junction for more details and photos.Continue reading Project Sea Lion is one crazy roadgoing and seafaring spatula
What's everyone's take on the 2012 Genesis 5.0 Sedan? I'm in the market for a new car, and this is the first (but not the only) sedan that caught my eye. I really wanted an Accord Coupe, but I'd prefer something 4-door with a little kick, that isn't too hard on the wallet.

I'm thinking $45k max, but that may change. Also I'm aware that the Genesis 5.0 is well over $45k, but if it turns out to be the best option I'll just hold out for a year or something. Your thoughts?

So I picked up an Ipad3 a couple of weeks ago and have been using it as an E-Reader. I prefer having a hard-copy but like the convenience of an E-Reader. Are there any services that will send you the hardcopy when you buy the electronic version?
