I thought it would have been safer to stay in the forklift?? although i guess those cage bars are spaced far enough apart though that allot of shit could fall through and hit you in the head....that was pretty crazy though, guys heart must have been pumpin.

saw that in the gif thread.
i'm still amazed how quickly, and how much comes down. you'd think they'd have a better storage system, so only the stuff above where he hit would fall, not this huge rack coming down like a house of cards.

it just seems like for that to happen, it would have to be overloading, and right on the edge of collapsing already.

It is much safer to stay in the forklift.
At work the racks collapse in sections, have only seen it happen twice. However, rows of product domino-ing into each other and going everywhere, that's a monthly occurrence :P

In my training I was told that the forklift is unable to protect you from major debris. I'd consider that major debris :P
I honestly think as long as it wasn't like a full pallet falling directly on the cage you wouldn't be crushed, but possibly maimed by something smaller.

Having worked at home depot, the equipment training is incredibly lax. My forklift training for example was, see that stack of pallets, if you can unstack it into two piles, and then restack it, you can have your forklift license. This was out in the parking lot with nothing around to hit, (although one guy failed like 3 times, and they eventually let him drive....)

And a lot of the day staff rarely drive other than their test, so when they do drive, they aren't very good at it. The guys who work at nights are typically the ones who are good on the machines since they use them daily.

Some of those racks do take a beating, they're supposed to pay attention to ones that have been hit, but if you take a walk around, there's usually a couple that are unsafe that haven't been replaced (not a small job to do), so one good hit would bring them done since they're already damaged.

any lumber guy at Hd whose worked for more than 3 months should also be semi proficient with a forklift and the electric reach - the reach is a bit harder to learn because the throttle is a joystick and the wheel is different from a car steering wheel.

man am I happy I left that job when I did...

Am I the only one who caught this?

You can't blame the operator on this one, who ever set up that racking should be charged.

Anything that supports that much weight should be able to withstand a little more then a tap. That was just an accident waiting to happen.

i think you're the only one who took it out of context. I didn't blame the operator. I did talk about the environment at home depot in regards to the racking, and in regards to operator training since it's interesting to note. Nowhere did I say that the inicident in the video was a result of a shitty operator.

Isn't there some law that racking over a certain height/weight needs to be anchored to a ceiling as well as the floor?

and x2 on the lax forklift training brett! I worked at HD Garden City (in the lumber depart) for 6 months, since I was usually one of the few employees in the store during the evenings with the training I was always on the trucks restocking....

Wasn't hard but they don't train you enough for them, it was a simple "take this lift down, unstack the 2, and lift one back up to the top rack" boom license approved, luckily I have used a forklift prior to that job.

This probably wasn't only a case of the operator though, I have seen people hit the racking and it not fall like that, unless he was flooring it...
